The load step is a triple threat move that I was shown by NBA skills trainer Drew Hanlen. The load step is to be utilized when a player is driving to the basket going to the basket with their weak hand. For instance, a right handed player will be using his right foot to jab and try to create space for himself out of triple threat play. In order for this right handed player to attack going left, he must step across his body and the body of the defender, negating the possibility of a straight line drive. By stepping backwards with the “Load Step”, the offensive player is able to improve his attacking angle by making himself skinny and being able to attack in a straight line as they beat the defender.
